Colin Gjervold sent me these photos that he took of the Red-legged Honeycreeper in Royal Palm Hammock in Everglades National Park. These photos were taken on Sunday morning the day after if was found.

Paul Sykes stayed with me for 4-days recently, we banded Painted Buntings and we looked through many pet shops in the Miami area to see what is out there. We found many interesting birds that were being sold. Here is a list of some of the more interesting ones that we saw.

Yellow-faced Grassquit, WEST INDIES RACE.
Cuban Grassquit
Cuban Bullfinch
Greater Antillean Bullfinch
Cuban Parrot
Hispaniolan Parrot
Painted Bunting

I asked two different pet shop owners about the availability of Red-legged Honeycreeper here is what one of them told me:

“An importer in Miami brings in 200 to 300 birds per shipment three to four times a year from Surinam.” Another importer sells them as well, I don’t know where those come from and I don’t know how many they bring in. Another pet shop owner told me about the same importer and about the availability of 4 species of honeycreeper that they sell. There were many other exotic species as well for sale in one of these pet shops.

Yes Painted Buntings are illegal to sell, Paul is working on this problem with Federal agencies.
