Chris Wood generously shared his bird list from yesterday's ENP trip. Heads up county listers! His great ducks at West Lake are just barely inside the Miami-Dade County line. He also had very good luck with Whips, Lesser Nighthawks, Cave Swallows ("likely Southwestern") and a Barn Owl at Flamingo. He had a fly-over Black-bellied Whistling Duck on Anhinga Trail.

Location: Everglades NP--West Lake
Observation date: 12/11/10
Notes: Part of the SCSCB bird monitoring workshop. AMAZING number of ducks that I have never before seen in the Everglades. We had 9 species of ducks here and two others (AGWT and BBWD elsewhere in the park today).
Number of species: 26

American Wigeon 19 Exact count. Amazing number of ducks here today.
Blue-winged Teal 7 Exact count. Amazing number of ducks here today.
Northern Shoveler 121 Exact count. Amazing number of ducks here today.
Northern Pintail 3 Two males; one female.
Canvasback 1 **Rare. My first for the Everglades. Immature male hanging out with two Redhead and a Greater Scaup. Some hint of red in the head but otherwise appeared female like (uppers also grayer).
Redhead 2 **Rare. My first for the Everglades. Two closely associating with Redhead, and to a lesser extent with a Greater Scaup.
Ring-necked Duck 11 Exact count.
Greater Scaup 1 ***Rare. My first for Everglades NP and completely unexpected. Very close studies through scope. Noted consistently more rounded head shape with highest poing of head in front of eye. No peak on back of head. Very large bill (wider than that of Redhead, direct comparison). Larger than any of the LESC (direct comparison). It stretched its wings twice when we could see much more well developed white in wings. I believe this was probably an immature female. there was no hint of any male characters (head, upperparts etc).
Lesser Scaup 33
Ruddy Duck 53 Exact count.
Pied-billed Grebe 6
Great Blue Heron (Blue form) 2
Snowy Egret 5
Green Heron 2
White Ibis 3
Turkey Vulture 8
Osprey 1
Short-tailed Hawk 1
American Coot 960
Belted Kingfisher 2
American Crow 2
Tree Swallow 30
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1
Palm Warbler (Western) 3
American Redstart 1
Common Yellowthroat 2
