I visited Flamingo today, 9th Dec. and was surprised to see a Cave Swallow flying over the marina. Soon I noticed a few more birds and estimated 20 in the area. Then I walked to the visitors centre, where there were many more. In total I estimated at least 200 birds, although there could have been more as they were quite spread out.
The birds at the visitors centre were clearly very stressed by the cold weather. They were flying under the roof and roosting together in a huddle (I'm not sure if this is a word you use in the US) on a ledge. At least 15 birds were grouped together to keep warm, so that only five or six were visible, the others nestled warmly below. I have never see this behaviour in any hirundile, although it is well known for wrens and treecreepers.
Whilst we were watching, a crow grabbed one, tried to kill it, but it escaped, only to land in the water, where it was quickly picked off by a Laughing Gull. Later, alother crash-landed in the water and a Laughing Gull got than one too. Very sad.
I spoke to a ranger who told me they first appeared yesretday.
I believe this is a scarce/rare bird in the park.
I can post photographs next week when I get back to the UK.
