The TAS sponsored Flamingo ESL Birding Trip held on Saturday, February 14, 2004, was attended by 15 birders. Unfortunately, Great-horned Owl was not located in the oak forest due to the heavy construction taking place in preparation for a new visitor’s center. We did muster up Wood Stork, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Harrier (male), Purple Martin, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Monk Parakeet, Downy Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe, Carolina Wren (heard), White-eyed Vireo and seven warbler species including Palm, Prairie, Northen Parula, Yellow-rumped, Black and White, Yellow-throated and Black-throated Green.

On the way to the SW Regional Library Stormwater Mitigation Ponds, we had a Burrowing Owl on the south side of Sheridan St. and east of Dykes right before the soutbound entrance to I-75. The Owl peered out of its burrow next to a small concrete pad. The pond on the south side of the library had two Purple Swamphens and several Glossy Ibis flew over.

A special word of thanks to Patricia Howell, Broward County Parks and Recreation Natural Areas Specialist, for giving us access to Flamingo ESL and sharing her botanical expertise on invasive exotics. Life is good.........knowing spring migration is already in swing.
