After the huge numbers of buntings during migration, I've seen very few since. I had two at my feeder during migration, but none since then, and I usually have wintering painted buntings. Guess maybe not this year.

But, I'm also not seeing significant numbers of raptors as in other years, so I doubt the decrease in buntings present in our area is due to raptors. I've had a Cooper's and Peregrine stalking my feeder in past winters, and the buntings and other birds still came to feed.

Maybe more birds decided to winter farther south this year. Preliminary reports from ENP and the Keys are showing fewer numbers of wintering warblers, so maybe it's all related somehow. We'll have a better idea once we do the CBC's. This is why it's important to participate in these counts so we can have good coverage of all the areas.
