Joe, Georgiana(sorry for the public post-but you didn't link to your emails) and anyone else interested..
Georgiana-yes you've got it right--Tanner is a former academic-quite former, sadly, since he died in 1991 or thereabouts-his last gig being at the University of Tennesee where, I believe, Dr. Pimm was his colleague. If you can find Tanner's thesis in print--I haven't checked that myself-you can probably get his wife Nancy-who collaborated with Bales on his book and found photos that had hitherto never been published of the 30's ivory-billeds-to sign the book.
And while you're at it, you might google"Stuart Pimm" as it is hard to imagine that any of us interested in our natural world hasn't read something he's written or been exposed to his ideas...and I believe he has also changed his mind about reading the book once I clarified to him that my mangled original post was referring to a new publication and not Tanner's thesis.
