Flock of 8 Snow Geese flying south ~1 mile southeast of Convoy Point in southern Biscayne Bay this morning. I went on an overnight fishing trip yesterday with light southeast winds and didn't see anything in the way of birds on the way out. Massive bait schools, so I knew this meant fishing would be slow, which it was. This morning I made some drifts with live bait in 150' of water off Key Largo without a bite, but saw a few Coots sitting on the water. I've never seen them out there. An adult light morph Pomarine Jaeger made a pass at one of the coots then continued south. Only other pelagics were a Brown Booby and several large flocks of Northern Gannets. While heading in, about a mile off Homestead Bayfront Marina (Convoy Pt.), I saw a flock of 8 Snow Geese flying south about 100' above the water. The winds shifted to northwest during the night, and apparently they brought some birds with them. I heard passerines overhead during the night, mostly palm warblers, flying south. In addition to the geese, there were my FOTS Red-breasted Mergansers near the jetty to the marina, and a Lesser Scaup made a fly-by in front of the boat as we entered the channel.
Although fishing was slow, I did manage a couple of grouper for dinner, and those last minute geese were an very pleasant, albeit extremely unexpected surprise. I was expecting a flock of Smew.
