I started out a little late this a.m. arriving at the STA 3-4 area about 0945. The first stop was the public use area just after turning off onto the Holeyland Road. I was primarily
trying out my new scope and my concentration was on the ducks. At this location there were hundreds of Coots and to my surprise a nice group of mixed ducks:two Northern Pintails swimming so gracefully and a good number of Ring-Necked Ducks. These ducks were in constant motion, diving and swimming and putting on a show. The Lesser Scaups and a Ruddy Duck as well as the Mottled and Blue-Winged Teals were present in this same group. Others may have been there also, as these ducks were a good distance away even with the use of a scope. Several brightly colored Roseate Spoonbills were present as well as other common birds for the area. By the time I got to the Harold Campbell PUA, it was getting near noon. As I walked past the Rust colored bridge that takes you to a series of cells I spooked a group of Coots and they flew into the reeds nearby. I looked over the large expanse of water/grasses to see thousands of Coots/ducks asleep in large rafts(more Coots than ducks.)There were hundreds of Blue-Winged Teals. The wind was blowing and it was hard to see much detail so far away. Well that was pretty much it as I remembered someone had mentioned that if you try to get closer to the ducks they end up moving opposite to where you are.
