Hi birders,

It may be prudent to point out that for birders keeping ABA-legal lists, the Florida Scrub-Jays at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (which includes Briggs Nature Center) are NOT ABA-COUNTABLE. The jays consist of a tiny (2 groups) artificial and unsustainable population that was introduced into the area in the 1980s to see whether FSJs can be moved into areas to which they did not occur naturally. The experiment was a success, in that the adult FSJs did remain to breed (the juveniles bailed and were never seen again), but the population is way below the threshhold where they could be expected to survive in perpetuity without continued releases.
