9 of us enjoyed delightful weather. Wakodahatchee was full of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, must have been 50; a group was up close and personal on the first part of the boardwalk. Grebes galore at Wakodahatchee and especially Green Cay, you know I was happy! The Cormorants were already nesting while the Anhingas and Great Blues were claiming their future nesting spots. At Green Cay there were many Moorhen teens, most loudly calling for their parents who weren't too far away. We had a Merlin and a possible Sora spotting by John Boyd and myself. Purple Gallinules, immatures mostly, were also around. All the other usual wading birds were present as well. However, no Limpkin or Bitterns. Five species of warbler, Pine, Common Yellow-throat, Yellow-throated and, of course, Palms and Myrtles. Four of us went on to Okeeheelee for a "rap session" with Hootie and John Welch, the naturalist. Painted Buntings were present as always, but no Wood Ducks to be found though we checked both lakes. I have arranged for a visit to the raptor compound with Mr. Welch on the January 29th trip. Cost is $3 per person to visit with the 18 raptors/owls in the compound. I'm really looking forward to it. Join us then!
