Following my failed attempt to locate the Thick-billed Vireo this morning, I headed to some of my favorite spots to bird when I'm in Florida. Castellow Hammock was easily the best spot of the day. The Rufous Hummingbird continues, as does four or five Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. The bird of the day for me though was a suprising hatch year male DICKCISSEL. The bird was in the first group of flowering bushes frequented by the Rufous Hummer. It was first seen feeding on the ground, but then I had to follow it around to see all the field marks once it retired to the bushes. The bird has already developes yellow in the Malar and it is distinctly lined with black. The upper breast also has a nice yellow wash both of which lead me to believe it is a male. Just slight hint of black above the yellow. Other birds of note included:
Painted Bunting female
Black and White Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Ovenbird
Monk Parakeet

On the road to Everglades NP just past the turn to Lucky Hammock was a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and a beautiful Swainson's Hawk, both of which posed nicely for pictures
