Having a couple of hours free this morning, I headed out at dawn to Dump Marsh, where I ran into Trey M and we were later joined by Stephen P. Highlights were the female REDHEAD, plus Blue and Green-winged Teal, a Northern Harrier feeding on a Coot, and a pair of Shiny Cowbirds.
Trey and I went to the quarry lake on 107 Ave, where the reeds have been trimmed and there is excellent viewing access from the road. Highlights here were our FOS Ring-necked Ducks, and 50+ Least Sandpipers.
From there, I went to Castellow Hammock. On the way I saw a Hill Myna on a wire along 162 Ave, near 244 St--the farthest south and west I believe I've ever seen one.
At Castellow, I waited patiently near the firebush at the front, and was eventually rewarded with the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD. During the wait, however, lots of other birds were moving around the bushes, including Blue-headed Vireo, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Prairie and Palm Warblers, and Painted Buntings. At one point, some ground birds spooked into a close bush, and after finding an Ovenbird and Painted Buntings, up popped a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW. Quite a surprise for that particular locale.
