This morning, I had my first birding class of the season at Everglades National Park. On my way down to the park, I stopped at Castellow Hammock Park; I saw a Rufous Hummingbird almost immediately after entering the ring of firebush trees near the park entrance. Several Painted Buntings were also in the area. At SW 312 Street, I saw four Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and three Western Kingbirds. They later flew to the wires on the west side of SW 217 Avenue. At Lucky Hammock, Cave Swallows were swarming over the hammock and surrounding fields. A small flock of Wilson's Snipe continue to feed in the puddles on the approach to the hammock. A few raptors were around, including a Red-tailed Hawk, but not much else. Royal Palm Hammock was also quiet, with a Limpkin at Anhinga Trail and Short-tailed and Red-tailed Hawks over Gumbo Limbo Trail being the highlights.

On my way home, I stopped at Dump Marsh and Cutler Wetlands. A Sacred Ibis was among the White and Glossy Ibis at Dump Marsh; it had a silver band around its left leg. Also present were two American Wigeon and a Lesser Scaup. Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mottled Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Black-necked Stilt, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Long-billed Dowitcher, Wilson's Snipe and Cave Swallows were among the species seen at Cutler Wetlands.
