This is Brian Ahern reporting the Florida Rare Bird Alert for 01/19/04. Reports are followed by coordinates from the DeLorme Florida Atlas & Gazetteer and the page number of Bill Pranty's ABA guide "A Birder's Guide to Florida" when possible.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY
Yesterday the 18th, a male RED-LEGGED HONEYCREEPER was found at Bill Baggs State Park. The bird was on the paved trail on the westernmost part of the park. Park in the parking lot with the restaurant and the weed hill. Procceed down the bike path and walk about 300-400 feet down the path heading south. Listen and look for the bird. A Parula was in the area. Once you pass the beggining of the bike trail and the rest rooms, you have gone too far. The bird has a grating wren-like call and a nasal call too (A. Harper). This is all the information I have, I will post further updates when more information comes in. DeLorme p. 119; Pranty p.222
Good Birding!
