I stopped by Lucky Hammock late yesterday for about an hour, I had some good raptors while there. All the birds were seen in the plowed field due east of Lucky Hammock except the Short-tailed Hawk, which was flying over Homestead.
Swanison’s Hawk, dark morph immature sitting in the plowed field.
An adult Peregrine Falcon doing the same.
Red-shouldered Hawks
Kestrels
Northern Harriers
Dark Morph Short-tailed Hawk
The most interesting raptor was what I think may be a Krider’s Red-tailed Hawk. It flew from a tree in the brushy area east of Lucky Hammock; it then flew across the plowed field towards the canal and landed in a tree. I only had my binoculars on so it was a long distance to view the bird. As soon as it landed an Osprey attacked it as well as Crows, Red-Shouldered Hawks, Kestrels and Northern Harriers. This poor bird could not get any rest; it flew around being chased by every other raptor in the area. It eventually landed even farther away on a Royal Palm where I could barley see it.
If I was able to get a scope view of the bird I would be more certain of the I.D. but I am pretty sure that it is a Krider’s Red-tailed Hawk. It had a very pale pinkish red tail and a very white belly. I don’t remember any bellyband. It was very light gray on the back with some light colored scapular feathers. It looks like an adult bird.
Any birders in the area may want to look for it; the bird was very skittish which is why I never saw it well.
