Jill Warner, visiting from Australia- returning from Ecuador, and I birded AD Barnes this morning. Warblers were very active, but a few of the recent regulars were surprisingly scarce (ie Am. Redstart, Waterthrush)- here's what we saw:
(11 spp.)
N. Parula
Pine
Prairie
Yellow-throated (yellow lored)
Worm-eating
Ovenbird
Chestnut-sided
Magnolia
Black and White
Black-throated Blue
Am. Redstart (one HEARD! what's up with that!?)
Fem. Scarlet Tanager, Veery, Peewee (thanks for the ID tips John!), Brown Thrasher, E. Kingbird, Coopers Hawk, Chuck Wills Widow, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Yesterday evening, while taking the Master Naturalist group from Fairchild Trop. Garden to Matheson, we saw Great Horned Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, and Sharp Shinned Hawk (some good birds for a beginning birding class!!!). After teaching them the Sibley holistic birding method, they all were quick to point out the flight style and tail shape of the accipiter overhead- correctly identifying it in flight! GO NATURALISTS!!!
okay...I'm late to class
