I birded Lucky Hammock and Long Pine Key Friday, 10/22. Lucky Hammock, according to a Florida birder who was there when I arrived at 8am, was not very birdy, but as a visitor from the northeast I was very happy with the Indigo Buntings, Blue Grosbeak, Painted Buntings, and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. A Caracara flew over. Few warblers--Prairie, Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat, and of course Palms.
I heard the distinct sound of a Dickcissel at Long Pine Key, but could not coax it out. I also think I heard a Swainson's Hawk fly over, but hawks are my weak point. My walk through the hammock by the 2nd bathroom for the Brown-crested Flycatcher was unsuccessful, though I did see a couple of Prairies. As Larry Manfredi said, the mosquitoes are very bad. On my return in the late afternoon to search for the Dickcissel again, I had Eastern Bluebird, Pine Warbler, and Eastern Towhee.
