This is breeding time for our south Florida spoonbills(November to April). The birds that are being seen at Flamingo arw probably flying from their nesting areas in Florida Bay to feed. Good news: They will be in breeding plumage.
Some years ago they abandoned their traditional nesting site on Cowpen Keys off Plantation Key and moved farther north in Florida Bay. They have not been very successful in recent years according to Jerry Lorentz, the NAS/AOF biologist who has been studying them.
Meanwhile the colony in Tampa Bay has been increasing according to Rich Paul, the NAS/AOF
biologist who has been studying them there.
Many of the Florida Bay Colony used to summer on Sanibel Island.
Good luck. It is worth the drive to ENP.

: Hi all,
: My sister and family will be in next week and the kids would love to see some Roseate Spoonbills. Are there any flocks that anyone feels are reliable right now in Broward or P.B. Counties? thanks.
