Weather and powerful eastern winds throughout the upper keys made birding and the Curry Hammock Hawkwatch challenging, but the weekend had its highlights.

The hawkwatch is in full swing, yet still early in the season, with a bit under 200 individuals of 11 species as of yet.

Highlights today were the season's first Mississippi Kite (a low flying juv.), Peregrines, Merlins, and migrating Ospreys.

The park also had good numbers of warblers including Prairie, Black-throated Blue, Cape May, Magnolia, Am. Redstart, Northern Waterthrush, N. Parula, Ovenbird, Worm-eating, and plenty of Palm Warblers.
Also sighted were Baltimore Oriole, Bobolinks, and over 250 White-crowned Pigeons in various flocks (all heading south-southwest).

My favorite was a beautiful flock of 7 northern Great Blues flying south along the shoreline (their dark neck plumage and prominent dark crowns separated these birds easily from local Ardea herodias).

THE HAWKWATCH STILL NEEDS VOLUNTEERS!!!!
PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU'D LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS VERY IMPORTANT COUNT.

Thanks
Rafael
