I paid a brief visit to Long Pine Key Campground in ENP during the middle of the day, looking for the Yellow-bellied Flycatcher Larry Manfredi reported seeing yesterday. Larry Manfredi, Dan Irizarry, and others were already there, quietly waiting for the return of the bird. As soon as I arrived (literally), the Cuban Pewee appeared and made quite the performance, sallying only a few feet from our heads. It gave a few soft calls. The tail has mostly grown out now, and the plumage looked much less worn overall than a couple weeks ago.
Larry and the other birds left after the bird departed, which incidentally appeared a few minutes later after they left with an entire feeding flock entourage that included Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Great Crested Flycatchers, White-eyed Vireo, Black-throated Blue Warbler (2), American Redstart (1), Northern Parula (2), Prairie Warbler (1), and Black-and-white Warbler (1). I spotted the Yellow-bellied Flycatcher high up in the canopy, which I found surprisingly bright yellow with a contrasting olive back and a bold, creamy colored eye ring. What a great bird!
