Hi everyone! Early evening yesterday a female anhinga flew onto one of the ponds in my community and appeared to have something stuck onto its bill. I checked it out, and she has some big wad of fabric and something gummy wound all around her bill. She was trying desperately to remove it. I called all the organizations I could think of and find to get her help, but it was after 5 and no one was answering. When she came out onto the ground, I tried to catch her. I got close several times, but could never catch her. The stuff is obscuring her vision and she flew right into a sign as I watched. (I tried to post about this yesterday to get help, but the post wouldn't load.) She finally roosted in a tree by the pond, still trying frantically to remove the stuff.
This morning she is not in my neighborhood, which is by exit 2 of the turnpike. So Homestead birders, keep your eyes peeled for an anhinga that has a large clump of stuff wound around the bill. She should be getting tired and hungry enough that we can help her. Feel free to contact me if you find her or see her.
