This morning, I heard a car slow down and stop next to me, while I was staring through my scope at a lone Buff-breasted Sandpiper amongst 4 or 5 Upland Sandpipers (in the field just west of 217th Street/north of SR-9336) it was Larry Manfredi and he had just photographed & recorded the song of a Cuban Pewee!!! Larry played me its song/told me what its call sounded like and gave me directions to its last known location, which was less than 15 minutes away! I hurried to the vicinity of the hammock near Gate 3 on the nature trail that is NW along the road just north of the Long Pine Key employee house; at 9:18 a.m., while standing at the gate, I clearly heard the Dee Dee Dee Dee call of the Cuban Pewee less than 30 feet due north of me! I pulled my binoculars up and searched through the shrubs & tree canopy, just in time to catch a quick glimpse of a small flycatcher taking off of a branch 30 feet in front of me and heading due north through the middle canopy. Myself and others searched for the bird until around 12:30 and were not able to locate it again. Thank you Larry for finding such a great bird and sharing this information with me! I will be back tomorrow morning at dawn in hopes of getting a better view. Good luck to all! John
