According to the Clement's Checklist, Crested Caracara (Caracara cheriway) and Southern Caracara (Caracara plancus) are now considered separate species. The range of Crested Caracara extends south to northern South America, while Southern Caracara is found from the Amazon Basin to Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. Thus, Crested Caracaras in Florida and Costa Rica are all C. cheriway. I saw lots of Southern Caracara during a recent visit to southern Brazil; I managed to photograph a few. According to the new Brazil field guide (by Ber van Perlo), the two species differ in the extent of barring in the scapulars and lower back.
