I had a pretty good day of birding Monroe, Dade and Broward. I hit Lucky Hammock and the Annex first, seeing a White-tailed Kite at about 6:30 am, land in the hammock, and immediately fly back west, where it had come from. I also saw several White-eyed vireos, empids, tons of Eastern Kingbirds and Purple Martens in the Immokalee Rd. area. I did get to see a Solitary Sandpiper east of the C-111 canal that I was looking for, so well worth the trip.
I then went to Dagney Johnsoon in Key Largo looking for a Black-whiskered Vireo, but didn't get to see it after a couple hours of looking (9am-11am).
In the early afternoon, I went to Matheson Hammock to look for the Kentucky Warbler, but had no luck. I did see a couple Worm-eating Warblers, a Louisiana Waterthrush, American Redstart, Black-and-White, and Northern Parula.
In the afternoon I went up to Miami Shores to look for a White-winged Parakeet. I drove around there and El Portal with no luck. I sat at Starbucks there at about 4pm and got great looks at a flock of them, and then immediately noticed two Red-masked Parakeets bothered by a Cooper's Hawk.
The reason for my mad dash today was that it was my last day of attempting a moderate year. There were a few South Florida birds I hadn't seen yet, and was able to pick up two ABA birds today (SOSA and WWPA). A great day, and now celebrating the end of my national (fiscalish big) year with my girlfriend at PRL in Hollywood with some White Hawk and Eye of the Hawk Ales.
