I put more effort into birding Matheson Hammock this morning (8/27). Started at the hammock trail at the north end of the parking area on the west side of Old Cutler Rd, then did the service road, and ended up on the east side from the parking lot to the bathroom area. I tallied the following total:
Black-and-white Warbler (2)
Prairie Warbler
Redstart (2)
Ovenbird (4)
Louisiana Waterthrush
Northern Waterthrush
Summer Tanager
Red-eyed Vireo
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (3)
There were no cars when I got there, no dogs, no cats, no raptors, no leaf blowers, riding mowers, nothing that would affect the birding. Now I can miss a bird or two as easily as anyone, but I'm pretty sure I didn't miss much. The birds are simply just not here in any significant number, at least, not at Matheson Hammock. A day without a Hooded, Cerulean, Blackburnian, Swainson's, Kentucky, or Canada at this time of year simply sucks!
