Few birds and no mosquitoes at Matheson this morning. Hum? Two days ago the mosquitoes swarmed on me like the paparazzi on Parris Hillton (pursposely misspelled). Today they treated me like the girls in high school. No mosquitoes at all. Conspicuously absent was the only organism more abundant than mosquitoes this past week - Cardinals. Whatever they sprayed with, it must have been strong enough to take out some birds as well. Saw 3-4 Ovenbirds, a Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-throated Vireo, and a couple Red-eyed Vireos. Where the service road meets the open area, a Great Horned Owl perched on a palm was being scolded by a vocal Cooper's Hawk from the same palm. With so few migrants around, it's beginning to feel like migraton again!
