This afternoon following a rain deluge we decided to bird the campus a bit. We ran into BG Gnatcatchers in virtually every other tree while walking. We were only seeing Gnatcatchers until we reached the preserve. Here we found a small feeding flock consisting of 10+ GNATCATCHER, 3 AMERICAN REDSTART, 4 OVENBIRD, several PARULA, a BTB WARBLER, DOWNY WOODPECKER and a single male ORCHARD ORIOLE. A PURPLE MARTIN was catching insects above us for a bit as well a four southbound CLIFF SWALLOW and two BANK SWALLOW.
We also heard a probable Summer Tanager call, we could not find the bird but it called several times. The call we heard resembled the "pit-i-tuck" tanager call; could be an early migrant.
Oh, almost forgot the buteo type Hawk soaring high above, this bird must have been 500 feet or higher in altitude. Migration is definitely heating up, the only thing that we are wondering about is; where are the early migrants? We have yet to read any reports of Kentucky, Cerulean, Hooded or Prothonotary Warblers down here.

Nature is Awesome
