Bird ID

Spotted this bird last Sunday in my oak trees, picking away at insects in the bark. A co-worker and avid birder believes it's a western kingbird. Any thoughts? It's about the size of a bluejay and was the only visible bird in the area during a very hot Sunday afternoon.
