I just finished reading "Miami's Parrot Jungle and Gardens" by Cory Gittner. Parrot Jungle opened in December 1936 and had a flock of free-flying macaws by 1937. Ten years after opening it had almost 200 birds, more than half of which were free-flying. The book said that by 1962, even though their breeding program was doing well, it was necessary to aquire more birds to replace macaws that died or flew away and did not return.
Based on this information, it seems likely that the Blue and Yellow Macaws in the Miami area did come from Parrot Jungle.
My question is: Since there were so many free-flying macaws for over 60 years, were these birds seen by birders? Were they ignored because it was known that they were from Parrot Jungle? If anyone has records or memories of these birds would you please reply to me personally or to the birdboard.
NOTE: Parrot Jungle did not lose any birds in Hurricane Andrew.
