This afternoon after talking to Toe about getting out to bird for early migrants we decided to take a short stroll through some of the birdier parts on campus. We were talking about which migrants would show first when; "zeet, zeet" a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher! Purple Martin and Chimney Swifts are gathering in larger groups over campus, they seem to be getting ready for the flight south. The Cooper's Hawks have successfully reared two juvies; they are now flying around whining like Toe during migration. Gray Kingbirds are on campus in larger numbers than in years past; we have seen young birds around but have not found any nesting evidence. And last but not least, the Green Herons fledged and all four are hanging around the nest site. Three Yellow-crowned Night-Heron have also fledged successfully from their nest just thirty feet from the Green Heron nest. They are stalking the edges of the pond for crayfish and other goodies we have seen them pounce on.
Bring on the migrants!
Nature is Awesome
