Dear Birders from the Left and from the Right:

It has been interesting to read the discussions some of our colleagues are having over the naming of birds. After all, we take names at times for granted, regardless of what they mean, our true intent usually is to communicate and spread the enthusiasm of a memorable sighting.
However, it is interesting how the American Sports(wo)man, under the pseudonym "BIRDER" is so typically egocentric. Of all informed groups, whether plant enthusiasts or butterfly connoisseurs, the American Birder insists in diminishing the experience into another checklist sport. What is wrong with communication, when it is truly informative, educational, and full of meaning.
WHY ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, THE BIRD IS PRACTICALLY ABSENT FROM ACADIA, NOVA SCOTIA? I REFUSE TO CALL IT ACADIAN. VIRESCENS, HOWEVER, IS TRANLATED LITERALLY AS "GREENISH", IN LATIN. NOW, THAT IS DESCRIPTIVE!!
EMPIS OR EMPIDOS IS GREEK FOR MOSQUITO (on the assumption that these birds eat many), AND "ANAX", AS WE ALL KNOW, MEANS KING.
Interestingly, our Cuban neighbors call it "Bobito (common for Empidonax, and spanish for simpleton) Verde (green)". No mention there of Acadia.
Lighten up and learn my friends
A new era for birding is yet to come.
