Wow! Interesting account. I know that drinking flowing water in the Big Cypress (and fisheating creek) was perfectly safe for me and friends I have who live in Ochopee (if you get sick, do not sue me). I also know, that contrary to advice of locals, I also drank standing water in the BC several times, without ill effects, other than a slight buzzing in my head each time that I did so (could have been the little green men murmuring, I really don't have any other explanation.) (I also ate a couple of oysters from near Black Point, also against advice, but again, without ill effects.) I do know this...if I was suffering dehydration/heat exhaustion, I would definitely drink flowing water from the middle of the glades. BTW, I had a levee/bicycle bad ride once myself. I went further than I had intended with a friend of mine down an Everglades levee. He had been a frequent 50 and 100 mile road rider not many years earlier and was very confident he could do 25 miles round trip on the levee no problem. Well, shortly after heading back, I got a bad pain and weakness in my left knee and I had to dismount at intervals and walk until the pain subsided, then ride again until I had to dismount again. Meanwhile, my robust young road rally friend began suffering heat exhaustion symptoms after we ran out of water, and he would not drink the Glades water, though I advised him to do so. Neither of us had a cel phone, I think this occurred before we even owned cel phones. At any rate, I do recall that calling somebody was not an option that existed in our universe in that time and place. We were both extremely glad when we finally got back to the Tamiami Trail. Since then, I always get a pain in my knee after riding a few miles on a levee road.
