Brian, you should have called me. I could've brought you a cold six-pack of Guinness Stout so, if you croaked, you would have at least gone happy.

Seriously though, glad you made it out okay. If I were you I'd invest in a SPOT GPS Messenger device. If you get in that sort of situation again all you have to do is press the Emergency 911 button and it automatically sends your GPS coordinates with an emergency message to the nearest 911 operator via satellite, so the message goes through even when you're out of cell phone range. That would have triggered rescue services to head toward your location.

The SPOT Messenger also has the ability to send "I'm Okay" email messages to friends, along with a Google Earth map with an arrow pointing at your location. It'll also track your trip so you can view it at home on your computer later on. I carry one whenever I'm off the beaten path and, when I'm on long solo canoe excursions, like my 129-mile Everglades trip six weeks ago, I also carry an EPIRB, which will send a MAYDAY distress signal to the Coast Guard.

If you need any further info on the SPOT Messenger unit, either Google it or phone me. Good to have you back!
