The heat is the primary concern for anyone birding in south Florida at this time of year. Mosquitoes are virtually nonexistent in the eastern Big Cypress (though I encountered a few this morning in Ochopee, where I had to retrieve my bike). Deer flies, on the other hand, are ubiquitous right now. During the thunderstorm portion of Wednesday's Levee 28 adventure, many tried to take shelter under the brim of my hat. I swallowed a few as well. They provide little sustenance.
The birds are out there, though. Just bring plenty of water, have a plan, and stick to it.
