Just got back from the Bithorn Baseball, Beer and Birds Bonanza in Puerto Rico with my son, Nick and daughter, Christine. Saw the Marlins beat the Mets 10-3 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in game one of the San Juan Series. Hiram is my great uncle and the first Puerto Rican to play Major League Baseball for the 1942 Chicago Cubs. Marlins Manager, Edwin Rodriguez has the distinction of being the first native born Puerto Rican Manager in Major League Baseball history.
Antillean Cave Swallows build their mud-cup nests on pieces of angle iron protruding from the pre-stressed concrete beams holding up the V-shaped concrete canopy of the stadium and constantly buzzed the crowd. Puerto Rican Flycatchers also hawked for insects during the game. Puerto Rican Lizard Cuckoo, Puerto Rican Tody, Puerto Rican Tanager, Bananaquits, Red-Tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Broad-winged Hawk and White-winged Parakeets were seen in and around El Yunque, a lush tropical, rain forest with waterfalls at every turn.
Recommend Luquillo Surfshop in Playa La Pared on Luquillo Beach and Hacienda Don Jose in Condado for Brown Bobbies, excellent Puerto Rican Cuisine and ice-cold Medallas - the Puerto Rican national beer.
As for the June Challenge, you can add Yellow-crowned Parrot and White-eyed, Red-fronted, Crimson-fronted and Green Parakeets seen in Miami Springs in the month of June.
Life is good..................knowing Brian survived the wilds of Everglades National Park. I have a camelpack that holds two liters of water that I used hiking the ten-mile trail with Kevin Sarsfield to find Colima Warblers in the Davis Mountains in the Big Bend of Texas. Heat-stroke can definitely be a killer.
