Well, we are birding down to the wire. Trey picked up Sandwich Tern at Crandon Beach this morning, while I added Greater Yellowlegs at Cutler Wetlands. These may be the last two birds for the June Challenge, but the rest of the team is still out there and we have a few hours to go. For my personal June list, I also added Lesser Yellowlegs, also at Cutler Wetlands, and Mangrove Cuckoo at Black Point. I heard and then saw the Cuckoo at 7:14 across the canal at the 248 St. entrance to the marina, right where it was previously reported.
Despite this morning's rain, Cutler Wetlands is looking great and is full of birds. The Greater Yellowlegs was soon joined by a flock of 10 Lesser Yellowlegs, perhaps harbingers of the soon-to-come shorebird migration. I know it seems like migration just ended, but don't get too comfortable. Shorebirds can be expected to start coming down in just a couple of weeks. Got sod farms?
