I just had to say that. Funny how this June Challenge thing makes you appreciate the birds that I usually take for granted. I started at O-dark-thirty this morning at Royal Palm, where I got a Barred Owl in the parking lot. I then I hit Research Road before first light, hearing plenty of Chuck-will's-widow but seeing only one. Dawn found me near the missile base looking for the White-shouldered Kite. No sign of it there, but I saw it on my way back kiting over the mound just west of the research center. I later relocated in the brush just before the missile base, but as I raised the camera it flew south. Standing on the roof of my car, I saw it perched about 1/2 mile to the south.
In the pinelands I found the Bluebirds and Nuthatches near Gate 2B right by the road. I then went to Gate 15 in the HITD, where on the walk to the mound I added Willet, Gull-billed Tern, and Sandhill Crane to the June Challenge list. Stopping at Cutler Wetlands on the way home, I spotted a 1st summer Ring-billed Gull mixed in with the Laughings. This was a new one for my personal June list.
Here are the better finds for the morning (JC=June Challenge addition). I'll ask Trey to post some photos if they came out OK.
