I stopped by Cutler Wetlands this morning on my way back from Everglades National Park. As I pulled up, I immediately noticed a tern with a dark carpal bar on the sandbar closest to me. I used my iPhone to take a look at Trey's photo and my scope to look at the tern; the bird in front of me looked identical: black bill, black mask extending to the nape, and that dark carpal bar. Only one problem, though: it was identical in size to two breeding adult Least Terns standing next to it! Sorry, folks, but I think what Trey photographed is a 1st summer Least Tern.
I failed to find anything new in Everglades National Park for the June Challenge. Least Bitterns were heard on Anhinga Trail and a pair of Swallow-tailed Kites, one carrying Spanish Moss, were soaring over the Royal Palm parking lot. Yellow-billed Cuckoos were heard on Gumbo Limbo Trail. Eight more Swallow-tailed Kites were on Research Road.
