Seeing a Common Tern in June in Pinellas is not "common" but certainly not unexpected. This year, our June Challenge Common Tern was added to our month's list when I saw "8" on June 18th at Three Rooker Bar, a spoil island just north of Honeymoon Island State Park. Were these immature birds moving north/south or do they "summer" along the Gulf coast?

Just yesterday there were 51 Black Terns at a Tampa Bay location, the highest-ever June total for Pinellas. This species migrates in late summer in big numbers out over the Gulf - how will this Gulf oil leak play a role in their population?

Have ya'll had any Blacks yet? Our county list is at 133 at the movement, with 7 days left.

Go to my site www.PinellasBirds.com and the June Challenge page to see how we do our June Challenge and keep track from day to day. Great fun to say the least.
