South Dade Birding - 10/18

Saturday's trip around South Dade produced a nice assortment of birds, many raptors putting on great shows, but no sign of Babs lurking in the underbrush (there was one unconfirmed Babs sighting atop of mount trashmore, reportedly eating watermelon, but once we got the scopes out, only the partially eaten watermelon could be positively identified). Over the course of the day the group covered Lucky Hammock, the Annex, Castellow Hammock, and the Dump Marsh. Due to a passing cold front early in the morning, we were treated to a wonderful raptor flight, a solid landbird day and lots of beautiful weather. Highlights were wonderful looks at both dark and light morph Swainson’s and Short-tailed Hawks, at least two Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Rufous Hummingbirds, and truckloads of Painted and Indigo Buntings. What a fun day with some great birders! Thanks to John Boyd for being the dedicated lister, here’s the list:
