Ventured out yesterday to so some birding at Kendall Indian Hannocks. Not much going on. No surprise. It's summer. Did have a flock of 8 White-winged Parakeets flying very high overhead. This is the most west I have seen them. Also some 5 Black Vultures and 1 Turkey Vulture very, very high overhead. Not soaring but flying south. The highlight was a Cooper's Hawk being mobbed in flight by Purple Martins. The Martins made a loud "chack" sound similar to what a Mockingbird makes. When the Hawk landed on a tree the Martins kept it up. Some seemed to actually hit the Cooper's. The Hawk took off again but the Purple Martins let up. Later had a Hill Myna fly over Sunset Drive near 826.

Later went to Dade Memorial Cemetery in Opa Locka to pay my respects for a loved one and noticed 2 types of exotic lizards at the cemetery: Curly-tailed and Giant Ameiva. Both species were fairly large. The place also had many Loggerhead Shrikes.

Wanting to diversify my knowledge of species in Florida I bought a book on Dragonflies of Florida and tried to identify species seen. At Indian Hammocks was able to identify: Halloween Pennant, Eastern Pondhawk (my favorite), Band-winged Dragonlet, Needham's Skimmer and some type of Saddlebag. Not too bad for my first Dragonfly watching expedition.
