I should have known something was up when Inga and I headed to the car to leave Paradise for work...across the street, just 10 feet away, on the chainlink fence, was a sleeping Painted Bunting (adult Female). I thought it might be dead at first, as if some Marlin falcon hit it out of the park, and forgot about it (I seem to recollect this happening recently). But as we watched it, stunned at its lack of motion, it opened its eyes, stretched, and stood up....weird. It then did what any self respecting PABU would do, it ducked into the abandoned weedy lot below...that's a good PABU.

After an excited voice mail message by Mad Dog Davis, I knew this morning would bring opportunity for birds- if only Everglades shut down for the day, and I could take off of work. Fat chance. About an hour at Lucky Hammock and the Annex yeilded less bird identification than were actually present, but still some good times were had.

Highlights included:

Rose Breasted Grosbeak (1) (female)
DOZENS, like as in 40 or so, of Painted Buntings, all females or first-years
Cape May Warbler (1)
Northern Waterthrush (1)
Yellow-throated (1)
Palm (many)
Prairie (1)
Parula (3)
Am. Redstart (3)
Red-eyed Vireo (3)
House Wren (1)
Yellow-breasted Chat (1 - heard only)
Bald Eagle (1 immature)
Over 100 Gray Catbirds

cheers

David
