In spite of being the great-nephew of Hurricane Hiram Bithorn, who pitched for the Chicago Cubs in 1942 and 1943, I am a die-hard Marlins fan. Hiram, who won 18 games in 1943, led both leagues with seven shutouts and came in third for the Cy Young award was a non-roster player on the bench for the 1945 Cubs/Tigers World series won by the Tigers in seven games. He had just returned to the Cubs after serving in the Navy during WWII.
In honor of the Marlins magical year, I am requesting that any Merlin sightings this week be reported as Marlins. Life is good..............and always remember - if a goat plops down in the seat next to you at a World Series game and you are rooting for the home team, be sure to share your peanuts with him.
