Molly, were you referring to the cowbirds or orioles? If it was the orioles, afternoon is indeed best. There is red flowered shrub (Brazilian cloak) that they feed at regularly at that time of day. Several times I've seen them bath in the nearby gutter of the neighbor's house. There is a birdbath right there, but of course they never use it.
