I spent this morning seeking 3 South Florida specialties: Spot-breasted Oriole, Red-whiskered Bulbul, and White-winged Parakeet. I found the oriole and the bulbul within 20 minutes of walking onto SW 86th St, just north of the Baptist Hospital.
The bulbul provided excellent views as it sat on a wire behind the 3rd house west of the SW 86th St./SW 89th Ct. intersection on the north side of SW 86th St. The bird was calling, preening, and flew off the wire once to apparently snag an insect.
After seeing the bulbul, I quickly heard then saw an immature Spot-breasted Oriole in a tree across the street from the location noted by David Laliberte for this species in late April: 8800 SW 86th St. After a few minutes of watching the immature bird, an adult Spot-breasted Oriole flew in, and the two foraged together in the oaks and palms at 8800 SW 86th St. Excellent!
I then searched extensively for White-winged Parakeet in the trees around the front (north) ponds of the Baptist Hospital, and at Matheson Hammock Park, but failed to find any White-winged (or Yellow-chevroned) Parakeets. In fact, Matheson was dead as a hammer.
What other locations might I search tomorrow for White-winged Parakeet? Should I try the Baptist Hospital again? The Tropical Audubon web site also recommends A.D. Barnes Park for this species, but recent posting here haven't been encouraging. Should I try anyway?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
My plan for tomorrow is to start at Black Point Marina, with hopes of seeing or at least hearing Mangrove Cuckoo. I'll head south then, and try to re-locate the LaSagra's Flycatcher found by Larry Manfredi. A long shot perhaps. And then on to Marathon so that on Saturday I can try to see Roseate Tern, Antillean Nighthawk, and other species of the Keys.
