On Saturday AM (22 May), a two-hour migrant/ West Indian stray search at Bill Baggs/Cape Florida SP on Key Biscayne resulted in only four transient migrants, the typical late-season warblers; 2 Blackpolls and 2 American Redstarts. Otherwise, it was an uneventful day of birding in Miami-Dade Co. A single Mangrove Cuckoo gave one series of calls at 2 PM (not elicited w/ playback) in the mature mangrove forests off the Jetty walkway at Black Point Park and Marina. Pair of N. Flickers presumably nesting in tall dead Australian-pines off SW 248th.
The shallow impoundment at Cutler Wetlands was high from recent heavy rains. Essentially no shorebird habitat. Only local-breeding Killdeer and Black-necked Stilts. Three Bald Eagles (2 near-ad., 1 imm.) over the landfill were somewhat notable. 250 Black Vultures and 350 White Ibis in view at once over landfill. A few Caribbean Cave Swallows foraging low over marsh but little else of note. Perhaps this churning surface low offshore, ushering in moderate to strong ENE winds, will produce something interesting. Passerine migration appears to be just about over in s. FL.
Good birding,
