Hello Folks,

I was told by some that a few individuals have been playing recorded calls to lure the Mangrove Cuckoos that have been frequenting the Black Point marina area. I would advise those folks and anyone else to refrain from doing this for several reasons.

Most important, it's illegal. The cuckoos are in national park property and you are NOT allowed to harass wildlife. By playing recordings you are harassing the birds, be they Mangrove Cuckoos, Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Prairie Warblers, Yellow Warblers, or Black-whiskered Vireos.. Remember that it is breeding season for the cuckoos and other birds in the mangroves. Responding to recorded calls means unnecessary energy expenditure for the birds.

The more these birds become harassed, the more their nesting success is jeopardized, and the greater the probability they would move elsewhere. Then we all lose.

Also, you do not want me to catch you playing these recordings because I will give you an earful and make sure you get fined. And if you get smart with me then i will give you more than an earful...trust me, I will and if you don't believe me just try it.

That said, have fun birding for cuckoos, I'll see you there.

-RJ
