A five minute walk around LH this morning proved what I thought to be true...the wintering birds are arriving!
The Hammock was alive with scores of Gray Catbirds and Cardinals crisscrossing the road and chattering to each other. Two YELLOW-BREASTED CHATs were doing similar (chatting, that is), and one appeared for an unusually long look, in the Ficus on the East side of the road, just Northeast of the Hammock. On the backside of the hammock I heard several bunting-like calls, but couldn't get a visual on any. Up higher in the oaks, though, was a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER (first year bird...look for the yellow streak accross the base of the vent) that responded nicely to some pishing. Common warblers were around in low numbers, but I got the feeling that more birds were likely to be nearby. Not enough time to check the Annex, maybe someone else will. If only I didn't have to work...I'd get so much more birding done.
cheers
