Twelve enthusiastic individuals joined me Saturday morning for birding in the Big Cypress National Preserve. We started at the Snail Kite Spot just west of Shark Valley, and were rewarded with a very cooperative Snail Kite flying past quite near the road. We proceeded west to Monroe Station and headed south on Loop Road through some really nasty water-filled pits to Sweetwater Strand, where we earnestly tried for Prothonotary Warber, which we got, but only by vocalization. Next, we headed to Gator Hook Trail, where we got excellent views of Eastern Bluebirds, not to mention the beautiful Bartram's Rosegentian wildflower. Then, we headed to the Kirby-Storter Boardwalk, where the key species (for me) was a beutiful Florida Watersnake. We headed up Turner River Road, which wasn't too productive, then headed to the Turner River Kayak put-in, where three Swallow-tailed Kites capped an excellent day. Thanks to all who participated.
