I was just loaned a copy of "Florida Bird Life" by Howell, published 1932. I've only just skimmed through it briefly, but already found some fascinating stuff, including:

-A photo of a flock of Flamingoes in the southern Everglades. Obviously escapees, probably from Hialeah racetrack, even though it hadn't opened yet when the photo was taken.

-Accounts of Ivory-billed Woodpecker decreasing by the 1880's, and how several prominent scientist-types had difficulty "collecting" specimens in many areas, and how many crackers hunted them, calling them better than ducks. Gee, remind me again, why did they go extinct?

-Bachman's Warbler distribution: "A common spring and fall migrant; apparently most numerous on the Keys.." In 1889 one guy collected 40 specimens in Key West! There's that "collecting" again. Jolly good!! And why did this one go extinct?
